Alan Samry is a writer, librarian, and public historian. He is co-author and co-photographer with Gabriel Gold-Vukson of Fairhope: Past & Present. Alan’s other books on local history include Mapping Fairhope: Legends, Locals, and Landmarks and Clay City Tile.
A congenital below-the-knee amputee, Alan’s first book, Stump the Librarian: A Writer’s Book of Legs, a memoir and history of leg amputees, was published in 2018.
A former journalist and public librarian, he serves students, faculty, and staff as the librarian on the Fairhope Campus of Coastal Alabama Community College.
Alan combines his passion and knowledge of Fairhope literature and history by leading walking tours. Fairhope by Foot Walking Tours began in 2020 to get people together outside during the pandemic. Alan continues to offer educational and entertaining personal walking tours to visitors and locals.
He and his wife Susan, a National Board-Certified Teacher, have called Fairhope home since 2005.
